One of the most complicated, and potentially expensive, choices that you will make for your new retail business are in the area of software. The number of choices can make the process confusing for those with little retail experience. Accounting, inventory and staff issues can all be dealt with by different software packages.
If you want a tool that is convenient and best for customer service then you should go for an electronic point of sale or EPoS system. If your stock levels are high then you can use barcodes to count sales of individual items. You also get the benefit of cash registers which combine a cash register till with retail technology features. Although the investment for this system is big, it does make a huge difference to the efficiency of your business.
However if you do not want to buy an EPoS system, these are the alternatives.
A database for inventory management and spreadsheets for accounting are the two main functions. A package like Microsoft Office will handle both of those requirements, but are fairly time consuming for a merchant to keep up with. And databases can be difficult to get to grips on if you are inexperienced.
That is why all-in-one packages are better. There are already packages available that are aimed at the retail market. The more functions your package can do the more money it will cost. To start with, determine how much volume you will have for your kind of store. If you sell large items, like Jacuzzis, and anticipate only a few sales per week, you will only need an accounting package for retail businesses that runs on one machine. You can use a cash register till to carry out the sale. Then you can record the sale on your computer once the customer leaves.
If you keep a lot of stock and sell many items this type of machine will not do. The accounting package will need to include a method for incorporating the sale as it happens, a regular cash register won’t do this. However you will still need a machine to print receipts, take credit card sales and recording the sales as they happen.
